“Taxing Together”- Help When You Thought There Was None

North Texas Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (“Clinic”) has been formed and is operated as a Section 501(c)(3) Charitable Organization. The Clinic received its Determination Letter from the IRS- which establishes it as a Tax Exempt Organization, as of May 13, 2016. The Clinic’s purpose is to ensure the fairness and integrity of the tax system for taxpayers who are low income or speak English as a second language (“ESL”) by:

  1. Providing pro bono representation on their behalf in tax disputes with the IRS;
  2. Educating low income taxpayers and ESL individuals about their rights and responsibilities as taxpayers; and
  3. Identifying and advocating for issues that impact low income and ESL taxpayers.

The Clinic WILL NOT prepare tax returns. That job is handled by the United Way of Denton County’s VITA (Voluntary Income Tax Assistance) Program in 10 locations throughout Denton County, Texas. Instead, the Clinic will focus on community education programs, tax consultations and taxpayer disputes (audits, appeals, collection issues, payment plans, innocent/injured spouse relief, identity theft problems, bad preparer issues, phone/letter scams, dependency exemptions, Earned Income tax credit, Affordable Care Act tax credits, etc.). The Clinic’s services will be free for eligible clients.

The Clinic’s taxpayer services will be conducted by Graduate Accounting Students from UNT, each of whom will be supervised by a licensed tax professional. When necessary, interpretation services will be provided for ESL clients. The interpretation services will be provided by language students from both UNT and TWU.
